I like the breezy, conversational style that we capture with this episode. Admittedly, the earlier episodes of the show do have a more rigid, structured feel to them, but with last week’s show (The 39 Steps) and this one, I think we’re definitely into the second stage of the shows evolution. Also, it’s just a generally decent conversation about the film, Platoon.
Another episode of the podcast that I’m really happy with. I feel like my co-host, Dustin, and I have really started to find out rhythm and things are tightening up. I also like how our discussion about the Hitchcock thriller, The 39 Steps, went. It was the first time seeing the film for me and it was a fun episode to put together overall. I recently watched Valkyrie for the first time and I was surprised to hear that, upon its release in 2008, it was not at all received well by critics or theatre-goers. Most of them complained about Cruise and the accents or just said that they found it a bland thriller that suffered from a lack of tension since we all knew Hitler survives the assassination attempt only to kill himself a year later. Having no knowledge/recollection of this attitude towards the movie I went into it thinking only of how the friends I have who had seen it had all spoken well of it. I went into the experience looking forward to seeing a powerful ensemble cast and just hoping I would get a solid World War II thriller out of it.
I believe this is exactly what I got, and maybe a bit more.

This weekend I had two events sort of dovetail into each other: I saw Captain America: Civil War and circumstances outside of my control left me without a new episode of my podcast, FYC, to release. Rather than simply ignore the latter, I decided to combine it with the former and set about recording an audio commentary for its predecessor, and my favourite Marvel film, 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In May of 2003 I launched a series of conversations with creators involved in the Star Wars line of books being published by Dark Horse Comics. Star Wars Saturdays at Silver Bullet Comicbooks featured such talents as Haden Blackman, John Ostrander & Jan Duursema, and the subject of this interview, Paul Chadwick. I’ve decided to introduce some new content by posting episodes of my film commentary podcast, For Your Consideration, here on the Meanwhile… page starting with our May the 4th celebration show featuring…yup, you guessed it.
I’m actually really happy with how this episode turned out. It’s probably my favourite that we’ve done, so far. I’ve heard a lot of Star Wars commentaries over the years and I can genuinely say I believe we talked about some stuff that I have yet to hear anywhere else. No easy task, to be sure. Also mostly regarding Leia, which is cool. It gets a little girl powery around the 7 minute mark. Good stuff. Check it out. Continue reading “For Your Consideration Episode 13: Star Wars (1977)”
